Writing copy that sells
It’s a shame that so many companies (especially smaller ones)
pay a large sum of money for a Website Design and then have someone
in-house write the copy. Usually the person that
gets stuck writing the copy ends up not being able to write compelling
enough copy. Writing sales copy is not an
easy
job.
There is a big difference between a writer and a copywriter.
The main difference is that a copywriter writes copy that sells.
They are experts at researching the needs of the target market and
then
writing to the emotions of that market. You can’t sell your
product or service to everyone. And if you’re not specific
in your writing you won’t sell anything to anyone.
Brian Tracy makes a good point when he says that every prospect
is tuned into the same radio station, WIIFM (What’s In It For
Me). And he’s right on the money. If you can’t
show the prospect what’s in it for him, you’ll be wasting
marketing dollars on unconverted prospects. They won't be converted
because the copy did not sell them on your company and it's services.
Whether it’s
a Sales Letter, Brochure, Website or any other Marketing Weapon.
Poorly written copy leaves money on the table.
Our Approach to Content Creation
We firmly believe that you should let a professional handle the
copywriting and content creation for your website. When we write
copy for a website we:
- Write compelling copy that gets prospects to take that next step
- Write emotional copy to peak interest (people buy on emotions)
- Write copy that leads a prospect through the buying process
- Write copy around a central theme
- Write to YOUR target market so they know you understand them
There are many other factors in writing compelling copy that increases
perception of your company and also leads people through the buying
process simply and efficiently.
We can write it or you can write it
With that said, we do allow our clients to write their own copy
if that’s all the budget will allow for. We also help them
along the way with copywriting advice and some basic reviews and
suggestions. But honestly it’s rarely ever going to
turn out as powerful as a professionally written piece of
copy.
So if you think you’re going to save some money by writing
your own copy you’re probably wrong (unless you’re a
copywriter or extremely good writer). The time you spend writing
copy could be spent on other areas of your business. And usually
a persons time is better spent on the other areas of business
and leaving the copywriting up to a professional.
If you’ve ever tried to write copy then you know exactly
what I mean. And if you haven’t written copy and
think you’re
going to, I’d suggest giving it a try for a page or two. After
you spend 2 or 3 hours fine tuning a page of copy you’ll see
that those hours would have most likely been spent better on
business activities that really do require your attention.
So if you want a top notch website I’d recommend leaving the
copywriting to the professional.
We have 2 options for you on the copywriting
for your website:
- You can write the copy yourself
- We can write the copy for you (recommended)
The choice you make may depend on your budget and writing skills.
You could always give it a shot and then if you decide it’s
too much work or if it doesn't have the impact you want - we’ll
take it over.
